In my practice as an artist I explore emotionally-charged aspects of everyday life, particularly occasions in which difficult situations materialise, or develop over time. While such events may result in portraits of family or friends, I also address these concerns through paintings of the physical location in which a moving or challenging moment has occurred. The room, still life or the landscape may be shown as empty, perhaps even bleak or “cold”, but the initial emotions involved still resonate within the push and thrust of the paint: memories are processed, translated, rendered anew. And while a strong sense of melancholy haunts these pictures, a quiet but insistent optimism is also present.
